Assessment

As a school we use a range of assessment strategies.

Summative assessments take place termly. We use NTS assessment papers to assess Reading, maths and SPAG. Writing is teacher assessed every writing unit and a termly judgement will be given under the WTS/EXS/GDS statements for each year group.

Formative assessments take place within every unit of study for foundation subjects. From these teacher assessments, teachers plan for retrieval lessons which take place in each class every week. These lessons build on pupils' knowledge and support any gaps in understanding.

Within lessons, teachers use AfL strategies such as 'popcorn' verbal responses, aiming to involve every child in the session. Pupils are encouraged to share responses with partners, groups and their teacher.

As children start the school (at any point across the school), their learning profile is supported through phonics checks, reading fluency checks and reading benchmarking. This helps to ensure that they can access the curriculum and that any additional support required can be put in place.

Pupils who perform well across curriculum subjects are given opportunities to represent the school at a range of events. From sporting competitions such as cross-country, instrumental performances to Latin competitions at a local secondary school. Our assessments are aimed to support and develop children across the whole curriculum and across the range of academic outcomes.
